Car Title Lost How And What Do I Need To Do To Get Another?

August 13, 2010

My girlfriends father is gifting me an older car its a 1989 Mitsubishi Mighty Max. The only thing is he lost the title. The car is from New Jersey and I’m in Pennsylvania. I have no registry or pink slip, just the vin # and mileage.. Do i go to a local DMV or would i have to contact a DMV in NJ? I’m not sure if the vehicle was ever registered under her fathers name, but her uncle had it before under his name i believe. Any help would be terrific, Thanks.

The last person who is listed on the title is the ONLY one who can request a duplicate title. That person is the legal owner of the truck YOU can not do anything on your own without a CLEAR title. So her dad or uncle, or whoever MUST apply for a duplicate title. You will NOT be able to register the truck in your name without a CLEAR title. Period.

Whoever was the last titled owner in NJ is the one who has to get the duplicate title from NJ. You can’t do anything in PA without it.

It’s possible to mail the application in with the appropriate forms of ID but it’ll take forever if he does it through the mail. NJ will issue dupe titles over the counter so he’ll be able to get it in one day if he goes directly to a DMV agency.
